What "sure 2 odds" means
It is a slip with a total price of about 2.00, built from 2 short prices. The usual recipe is a favourite at about 1.30 and another at about 1.50: 1.30 × 1.50 = 1.95. Each leg looks safe on its own. The slip is sold as safe because of that.
To test it, I took every home win and away win in the Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, Bundesliga, Ligue 1 from 2023/24 to 2025/26, with the average price across bookmakers at kick-off. Then I built every double of a 1.25–1.35 leg and a 1.45–1.55 leg played on the same day: 350 doubles on 113 match days.
A short price is not a sure thing
Prices are honest about the chances. A win priced at about 1.30 came in 76% of the time, close to the 77% the price suggests. That still means 24% lost: 1 in 4. At about 1.50, 1 in 3 lost.
- 1.10–1.20118 bets 87.1% 88.1%
- 1.20–1.30253 bets 80.3% 79.1%
- 1.30–1.40336 bets 74.2% 76.2%
- 1.40–1.50336 bets 69.1% 67.3%
- 1.50–1.70758 bets 62.6% 61.2%
- 1.70–2.001,163 bets 54.4% 52.9%
- 2.00–2.501,737 bets 44.9% 45.2%
The scale starts at 40%. "Said" is the chance the price stands for, with the bookmaker's cut left in.
Two legs at 1.95, or one bet at 2.00
The double came in 49.7% of the time. A single bet priced 1.90–2.10 came in 48.5% of the time. For the same total price, 2 "safe" legs were no safer than 1 bet.
| Bet | Bets | Came in | Back per ₦1,000 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sure 2 odds double1.25–1.35 × 1.45–1.55, average 1.94 | 350 | 49.7% | −₦39 ± ₦126 |
| Single1.90–2.10, average 1.99 | 759 | 48.5% | −₦36 ± ₦72 |
A negative figure is money lost. The ± is the range luck alone can move it across.
Both lost money, and by about the same amount: about 4% of every stake. That is the bookmaker's cut at the average price, which is small. The double lost only a little more. At a bookmaker with a bigger cut, the double pays it twice.
What the bookmaker keeps on an accumulator
Every price has the bookmaker's cut built in. On an accumulator the cuts multiply, leg by leg. Below is what that comes to at the Nigerian bookmakers we read, if every leg carries their usual cut on the Premier League match result (from what each bookmaker charges).
| Kept from ₦1,000 | Single | 2 legs | 5 legs | 10 legs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1xBet Nigeria | ₦15 | ₦30 | ₦74 | ₦143 |
| SportyBet | ₦29 | ₦57 | ₦137 | ₦256 |
| MSport | ₦29 | ₦58 | ₦138 | ₦257 |
| BetKing | ₦44 | ₦86 | ₦201 | ₦362 |
| Betway Nigeria | ₦91 | ₦173 | ₦379 | ₦614 |
On a single bet the gap between 1xBet Nigeria and Betway Nigeria is ₦76 a thousand. On a sure 2 odds double it is ₦143. On 10 legs, Betway Nigeria keeps about ₦614 of every ₦1,000 before a single match is played. Where you place an accumulator matters more than where you place a single.
Longer slips of "safe" legs
The same sum works for longer slips. Each extra 1.30 leg raises the price and cuts the chance. The table uses the rate at which 1.30 wins really came in (76%):
| Legs at 1.30 | Total price | Comes in | About |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1.30 | 75.7% | 8 in 10 |
| 2 | 1.69 | 57.3% | 6 in 10 |
| 3 | 2.20 | 43.4% | 4 in 10 |
| 5 | 3.71 | 24.9% | 2 in 10 |
| 10 | 13.79 | 6.2% | 1 in 16 |
A slip of 10 legs at 1.30 pays 13.79 and comes in about 1 time in 16. Each leg is "safe". The slip is not.
What these numbers do not tell you
- That some tipster's doubles are different. These are all the doubles in the price range, not a hand-picked set. Anyone who says their picks do better should show a full record, losses included. Ours is on the record page.
- The prices at your bookmaker. Results are at the average price across bookmakers at kick-off. A Nigerian bookmaker with a bigger cut pays less on the same slip.
- Bonuses. Some bookmakers add an accumulator bonus. It gives back part of the cut on long slips. It is not counted here.
- The future. 3 seasons of past results are not a promise about the next match.
How this was measured
- Matches. 5,256 league matches in the Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, Bundesliga, Ligue 1, 2023/24 to 2025/26. Every home win and away win counts as a bet. Draws are left out as bets, but a draw loses both.
- Prices. The average across bookmakers at kick-off. The price bands include the lower end and exclude the upper: 1.30–1.40 means 1.30 up to 1.39.
- Doubles. Every pair of a 1.25–1.35 leg and a 1.45–1.55 leg kicking off on the same day, 284 short legs and 375 longer ones in all. Many doubles share a leg, so the ± on them comes from re-drawing whole match days at random, not from treating each double as separate.
- Bookmakers' cut. Each Nigerian bookmaker's median margin on the Premier League match result, from the prices on the margins page, applied to every leg. Real margins differ by match and market, so the ₦ figures are a guide, not a receipt.
